How Close to the Potholed Line Are You?
The positive side of potholing for a utility crossing in advance of
excavation is that pre-planning helps eliminate surprises in
locating the line. However, actual mechanized excavation of the line
is still a major challenge. Following a review of typical line
crossing excavation practices using potholing and the related safety
issues, a new safer and more efficient process of line crossing
excavation will be introduced using a real-time measured guidance
system called Line Alert. Following the presentation a live
simulated line crossing excavation using
potholing and Line Alert will occur at the outdoor exhibit area.
LIVE DEMONSTRATION OVERVIEW
A six foot deep pothole will be made and a piece of pipe inserted at
the bottom of the pothole to simulate a line crossing. The LINE
ALERT
Panel will be installed on top of the pipe and the pothole will be
backfilled. A safe barrier distance will be pre-determined by asking
the audience for a recommended dig depth. An excavator
operator who has no prior experience with using LINE ALERT will be
used to excavate down to the safe barrier distance following the
Line
Alert Panel as a guide. The demonstration will highlight the safer
excavation environment created by keeping labourers out of the ditch
as probing and re-confirming the line are not necessary. The
demonstration will also show the efficiency and accuracy created by
using the Panel and having a visual guide as to the distance to the
line.
Two excavations will occur demonstrating the consistent and
replicable
nature of digs using LINE ALERT.
