  • Backhoe/trackhoe accounted for 28.2% of facility events reported
  • Hand Tools, Probes and Vacuums accounted for 21% of the natural gas and about 10% of the telecommunication facility operations events
  • 22.2% or 11,457 of the reported facility events were recorded as excavation practices not sufficient

“Based upon the facility event data submitted for root cause, the option ‘excavation practices not sufficient’ was the second most frequently reported root cause by stakeholders (11,446 events, 22.2%). Stated another way, these facility events occurred even though a notification was made to the notification center by the excavating party, and the facility locate markings were presumed to have been accurate.”
